On Thursday, Oct. 8 at 12:07 a.m., police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian struck on the eastbound Long Island Expressway at 168th Street. Upon arrival, officers observed a 61-year-old male, unconscious and unresponsive, lying on the roadway. EMS responded to the location and transported the victim to New York Hospital Queens, where he was pronounced deceased. Further investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that a gray 2015 GMC Terrain, operated by a 22-year-old male, was traveling eastbound on the Long Island Expressway in the right lane at the at location when the pedestrian was attempting to cross the expressway from south to north.
The vehicle struck the pedestrian with its front passenger side corner, causing the male to fall to the pavement. The operator of the vehicle remained at the scene and was uninjured. There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing. The identity of the deceased is pending proper family notification.
