Late last month, Congressman Greg Meeks (D-Jamaica) and Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) announced the passage of a bill to rename the post office located at 218-10 Merrick Blvd. in Springfield Gardens to the Cynthia Jenkins Post Office Building.
As a community activist, Jenkins fought for social and racial equality, better education and improved healthcare for veterans. As a librarian, she promoted literacy throughout Queens. She took her causes with her to Albany where she continued to advocate on the floor of the State Assembly, where she served for 12 years.
“The dedication of the post office will both honor all that she did for our community and remind us to stay dedicated to her causes,” Meeks said.
