A bus driver in South Ozone Park allegedly abandoned his vehicle mid-route, leaving a bus full of children, all under the age of 12, stranded in the middle of Southeast Queens.
Police said that the incident took place on Friday at approximately 3:15 p.m. The driver, who was dropping off the kids from the Al-Ihsan Academy in South Ozone Park after school, left the bus at the corner of 134 Street and 111th Avenue. According to published reports, he fled the vehicle after finding out that police were searching for him in connection to an unrelated domestic violence situation. Police visited the Al-Ihsan Academy in hopes of finding the driver. The school then contacted the driver to question him about the police visit.
Witnesses who later came forward said that the bus was driving in a suspicious manner before pulling over. The driver then jumped out of the vehicle and fled, with one of the children on the bus chasing after him.
Witnesses reported the abandoned bus to local authorities. Parents were promptly called and picked up their children from the corner where the bus was left. All of the children on board were unharmed.
Police told the PRESS of Southeast Queens that no arrests have been made yet and the investigation is ongoing.
