For the third year in a row, the Greater Allen AME Cathedral in Jamaica held their now annual tradition, the “Christmas on Merrick” charity giveaway on Tuesday.
The five hour long giveaway sees church congregates, clergy, community activists, civic leaders and politicians unite to giveback to the community and the borough at large. This year was no exception. Based on donations made over the weeks leading up to Christmas, the goal of “Christmas on Merrick” is to provide those in need with some of the things that many New Yorkers take for granted such as toiletries, clothing and other living necessities.
They also giveaway toys for parents who may be strapped for cash during the holiday season.
The church works with a number of organizations including Feed the Children, a nonprofit that provides life essentials to the needy, and Toys for Tots, the toy based charity founded by U.S. Marines.
Hip-hop artist and St. Albans native LL Cool J also stopped by the Southeast Queens charity to lend a hand to his community.
“Nothing more important than remembering where you came from,” James told 1010 Wins on Monday. “A lot times people forget that. I’m just glad I can do that.”
Nearly 700 families were served in this year’s “Christmas on Merrick” event.
