Kids may have off from school this week, but the Police Athletic League made sure that youth from all five boroughs had something to do over winter break.
The PAL Edward Byrne Center on Guy R. Brewer Boulevard in South Jamaica hosted the Games Day Tournament of Champions on Feb. 18, which gave young members of the PAL a chance to test their skills in a number of different activities.
Events during the Games Day ranged from board and card games to educational activities like an egg drop, racing balloon-powered mini-cars and a paper table challenge, to fitness exercises, including jump rope, ping pong and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
The Tournament of Champions is an annual event for the Police Athletic League, which seeks to foster a better understanding and relationship by bringing together boys and girls of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
PAL encourages youth to develop athletic and educational skills and the sportsmanship qualities of discipline, fair play and healthy competition. The Police Athletic League, the City’s largest non-profit youth organization, provides a number of activities to more than 35,000 boys and girls each year.
