People Of Southeast Queens: Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2017

SUNY Oswego has awarded merit scholarships to several Queens students who started college in the fall of 2017—including Queens Village broadcasting and mass communication major Stacey Malone, St. Albans zoology major Dezigner Moore, Rosedale electrical and computer engineering major Gabriel Olufade, Jamaica biochemistry major Mellika Hoppie and broadcasting and mass communication major Jason Tomlinson, Richmond Hill accounting major Sophia Naranjo, Rockaway Beach’s Treigh Washington, East Elmhurst business administration major Julian Yepes and Rego Park finance major Dimitrije Davidovic Vedda.

Several Queens students recently completed their undergraduate studies and received their diplomas from SUNY Oswego, including Springfield Gardens’ Ebony Staley (bachelor of arts in public relations) and St. Albans’ Amani Beauzile (bachelor of arts in psychology) and Dion Matthews (bachelor of arts in graphic design) and Far Rockaway’s Marquis Wright (bachelor of arts in information science).

SUNY Oswego has awarded presidential scholarships to several Queens students. The scholarships are $20,000 over the course of four years. Recipients include Jamaica childhood education major Tamara Dalton, Astoria meteorology major Sydnei Williams and East Elmhurst cinema and screen studies major Navdeep Gill. The school has also given dean’s awards scholarships to several Queens students. The scholarships are $6,000 over four years. Recipients include Jamaica’s Fabiana Netus, Corona biology major Christhian Diaz, Woodhaven English major Juliette Schmidt and Flushing biology major Gengle Niu.

The New York Army National Guard has announced that a number of Queens soldiers have been inducted into their various units—including Jamaica’s Spc. Mohammed Huda (Company B, 101st Signal Battalion), St. Albans’ Pvt. Loquinta Humphrey (Company F, 427th Brigade Support Battalion), Queens Village’s Pvt. Robert Joseph (133rd Quartermaster Company), Hollis’ Pvt. Lloyd Mumby (Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery), Rockaway Park’s Pvt. Ivan Nyiiro (Company F, 427th Brigade Support Battalion), Astoria’s Pvt. Henry Reyes (Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry), Elmhurst’s Pvt. Zulaga Garcia (Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry), Fresh Meadows’ Pfc. Noel Acosta (Company D, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry) and Flushing’s Pfc. Qiang Chen (Company C, 642nd Support Battalion) and Spc. Yoojin Park (37th Finance Detachment).

Buffalo State announced that three Queens students were among the graduates who received their baccalaureate degrees this past summer. Graduates include Queens Village’s Anthony Pieters (bachelor of science in criminal justice), Springfield Gardens’ Melissa Scott (bachelor of science in fashion and textile technology) and Arverne’s Askanti Gouveia (bachelor of science in economics).
