Sermon Topic: Look, Listen and Do

Greater Springfield Community Church

Scripture: Deuteronomy 28:1-2: “Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord, your God, to observe carefully all His commandments, which I command you today, that the Lord, your God, will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you because you obey the voice of the Lord, your God.

Children learn by looking and listening—and what they see and hear others do, they begin to mimic and do. This scripture directs us to do the same. Listening to the voice of God and knowing the Lord’s commandments are definitely a great start to get your life in a good position in receiving the promises that God has in store for us. The last and most important key in this scripture that is mentioned is doing. The Bible says that if you listen, be obedient and do, then you shall receive.

Therefore, although listening is important, it isn’t enough to receive the abundance blessings of God. The Bible speaks about how “faith without works is dead.” We are expected not only to believe in the power of God, but also to demonstrate it by doing good to others. Your actions are a direct reflection of your heart. God mentions to us in His word that He is not concerned with the outer man, but rather inner man—or the heart, to be more specific.

Walking around with a bad attitude, grudges and animosity will only block you from God’s takeover of your life. Grudges, animosity and an unforgiving attitude begin to harden the heart and when you have been diagnosed with a spiritual hard heart, that means it has become clogged like a drainpipe through which nothing can flow through freely.

We need to have a constant flow of God’s character running through our heart, so that we are constantly reminded of how we are to act every minute of the day.

The Bible says, “All these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you.” The word “overtake” can also be looked at as “to catch by surprise.” God wants the best for you. He wants to do the very best in your life, if you let Him. Most loving parents like to surprise their children with a gift when they are proud of what they are doing. God wants to do the same to you. He wants to catch you by surprise. He wants to help you accomplish your dreams and visions and overcome every obstacle in your path. He wants to overtake you with new mercies everyday and overcome you with His loving kindness on a regular basis. He wants to amaze you with His anointed power and allow you to experience the abundance of His blessings. We should never be in a complaining mood, but rather in an explaining mood that says upon waking every morning, “I’m grateful—I’m thankful and I can’t wait to see what God is going to do in my life today.”

Therefore, make room in your heart and mind for what God wants to do in your life today. Keep an attitude of faith and expectancy. When you do this, you will see His hand of blessings overtake you and bring you to new levels in every area of your life.
