Alex Nahorney (left) is a School Counseling Intern from St. John’s University at Hillcrest High School in Jamaica. With her is Hillcrest High School College Advisor Mrs. Gordon, who has nothing but high praise for Alex’s work ethic this school year. She helps the students apply to college, even spending extra time with a few students who have family problems that make the application process difficult. She even comes in on days off if there are too many students facing deadlines. She has been hired by CUNY to do a summer Bridge to College Program.
Students from the Scholars Program in Martin Van Buren High School in Queens Village are working with Junior Achievement and Teaching for a Day at nearby PS 33. The scholars prepare lessons and then spend one day teaching K – 2 and another day teaching 3rd through 5th grade children. The lessons are on how to save money and job opportunities in their community. Student volunteer Mehreen Shah said that Teacher for a Day “showed us how to lead a class and do teamwork.” Sumbal Syed commented that, “it allows us to experience what teachers do on a daily basis.” The advisor of the program is English teacher Pamela Fried. The principal of Martin Van Buren High School is Sam Sochet.
