The statue, sculpted by Frederic Ruckstull in 1896, commemorates Union Army soldiers and sailors from Queens who died during the Civil War. Originally, it was on a traffic island at Hillside Avenue and Merrick Boulevard. In 1960, it was moved to Major Mark Park.
