A Personal Perspective
BY MARCIA MOXAM COMRIE
Well, that didn’t take long.
Donald Trump has quickly followed through on his campaign threat to ban Muslims from entering into the United States. Well, at least, those from countries where he does not have business interests.
The now-president is showing not just fangs, but muscle, against a whole slew of people based on their religious persuasion and, no doubt, their complexion as well.
Trump issued an executive order that suspends entry of all refugees to the United States for 120 days and barred entry for 90 days for citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Left off the list are countries such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia, where he is said to have investments. There is so much hypocrisy and cruelty here that you want to scream.
His unilateral travel ban from those seven majority-Muslim nations has angered people around the world and led to protests right here at home.
We knew we were in for a bumpy ride when Trump shocked the world by winning the presidency, but our heads are spinning with the rapid-fire speed at which he’s making his unpopular moves.
Protecting the safety of America and Americans is of the greatest importance. But to single out people specifically from those countries with no room for negotiation is insane by diplomatic standards. Trump is running the country like it is his personal business empire: my way or the highway.
He struts around just as pompously as he did as the businessman and reality show ringmaster. This man knows nothing about governing and is surrounded mostly by people who know nothing about it either.
His cabinet picks are people who think the way he does and are similarly wealthy. They are a motley crew of political neophytes who are afraid of anything and anyone who look different. And the irony is completely lost on Trump that he is the son of an immigrant (his mother was from Scotland) and that two of his three wives are immigrants.
The difference is that they came from lilly white countries, whereas the people he’s banning are from “brown countries.” This is a deplorable act of race and religious prejudice.
America was not meant to be only white. It is a country conceived to accommodate people from around the world even if the founders weren’t expecting them. But it’s not just for Europeans. Of course, there are always going to a small number of people who come here and wreak havoc.
These are the ones who should be weeded out with proper screening. But this is excessive screening. And why single out just folks from majority-Muslim nations? We have terrorists born and bred right here at home.
Interestingly, Trump seems to have quite the affinity for people associated with the Ku Klux Klan, what does he think that group is?
The men, women and children who are now hindered from entering into the United States have been collectively condemned as criminals and would-be criminals because Donald Trump deems them so.
What a shameful, unconstitutional act to perpetrate just because the president wants to impress his racist base!
