In celebration of the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., State Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway) will be hosting a debate on the Obama Administration, posing the question of whether it was fruitful or fruitless.
Arguing the position of fruitful will be Professor Deirdre Owens, Assistant Professor of History at Queens College, CUNY, and Dr. Alfonso Wyatt, Vice President and Project Director of the Jericho Faith-Based Technical Assistance Project.
Arguing the position of fruitless will be State Senator James Sanders Jr., Democrat, Representing the 10th District in Queens, NY and Dr. Lessie Branch, senior research fellow at the DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy at Medgar Evers College. She is also on faculty at Monroe College.
The moderator will be Dr. Ron Daniels, President of the Institute of the Black World 21st Century and Distinguished Lecturer at York College, CUNY. The event is set to take place at the Black Spectrum Theatre, located at 177 Baisley Blvd. in Jamaica inside Roy Wilkins Park.

Martin Luther King Poetry Slam
Sponsored in a combined effort by State Sen. Leroy Comrie, Assembly Member Alicia Hyndman and Council members Rory Lancman and I. Daneek Miller, the Precise Publishing Group, Bethany Youth Ministries and the Voice of the Youth Changes Everything, the first every MLK Poetry Slam with be held at 7 p.m.
Hosted by community civic leader and author Delicia Davis and Franck Joseph, the two hour artistic throwdown where participants are encouraged to speak on pride, social justice, inequality, race or any of the core principles of Dr. King. It is sure to be one you won’t want to miss.

The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Commemorative Service
Come by the Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church in Jamaica, located on 179-09 Jamaica Ave. Come by as we look back and celebrate the life, work and accomplishments of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event will be led by Pastor Jason D. Davis. Special guest Congressman Gregory Meeks will be joining the congregation and the community to talk about the late civic leader’s impact on the United States and the world.
